Today marks the start of works for the West Midlands Interchange (WMI) project. Development consent was granted in May 2020, and since then we have been busy preparing to start the build.

Winvic Construction Ltd have been awarded the main contract for the first phase of the construction. The works initiated today will prepare the site for construction, with main construction works programmed to start later in 2023.

Our initial scope includes a start on earthworks across the site to prepare the ground for main works. As well as earthworks, we will be starting the environmental works, such as constructing new badger setts, conducting bat surveys and constructing bat boxes to be placed in suitable locations across the site. We will begin removing invasive species and clearing vegetation where strictly necessary for construction activities.

This 734-acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) site at M6 Junction 12, will deliver up to 8 million square ft of commercial space which will transform multi-modal movement of goods around the UK.

As well as helping to attract global business and investment, WMI will create more than 8,500 new jobs, boosting opportunities for people in the Midlands. Designed in consultation with the local community, 109 acres for two community parks are being created as part of the site’s development.
