Sustainability

Lowering Emissions

Rail freight produces 70% less carbon dioxide than road freight. As well as nitrogen oxide emissions that are up to 15 times lower and particulate emissions nearly 90% lower.

Reducing road traffic

Each freight train has the potential to remove between 43 and 77 heavy goods vehicles from the road – depending on its load.

Consistent Expansion

Rail freight transports carries nearly 70 million tonnes of goods per annum, container traffic moved by rail has grown by 78% since 1998 with annual growth of 3% predicted until 2043.

Growing Investment

With many of SRFIs located along the M1 corridor, investment in other areas is a vital step towards expanding sustainable freight across the country.
